What should I bring with me to Boston?

I live in California and the middle school choir is going on this big trip to Boston, Massachusetts. We will sing at the heritage festival, and then we will take a bunch of tours of historic landmarks and other things like that. We'll also be going to Hard Rock Cafe and to a Red Sox game at Fenway Park. We'll be there for 4 days & 4 nights. What should I bring? [[including clothes!]] Like how many tops, jeans, etc, and also what other stuff?? Any must-haves that I just MUST bring!? Thank you!! =)

Boston for me?

I'm thinking seriously about moving to Boston within the upcoming year. I'm only 18 right now, but as soon as I finish my AA degree out here in California, I want to either attend boston University, Boston Baptist University, or the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology. I plan on becoming a psychiatrist and also getting a degree in biblical counseling while writing novels on the side. Is boston the place for me?? I was thinking of Allston specifically.

You Go GIRL! By the way, at Copley Square, there is a place called the Union Oyster House! It has been in operation since the 1850's and has a Fantastic Seafood assortment. Try the Seafood Bisque! Oh yes there is a Parking Garage, about 1/2 block from the Union Oyster House. IF you park there, you can get your ticket VALIDATED at the UOH which is good for 3-hours! Leaves you enough time to eat and then meander around Copley Square! Oh yes, the WINTER Weather there is Bitter! But you will get use to it. The Boston area is Expensive, so plan well! Good Luck! Thanks, RR

What are my chances of getting into Boston College?

I got a 1990 on my SAT, which will probably improve considering I'm only going into my Junior year. I have started an investment club at my school and play two sports, basketball and cross country. By the time I graduate, I will have about 110 hours of community service because I will have gone down to West Virginia to build houses for a week two times. My GPA, on a 4 point scale, is about 3.65 at one of the top public schools in Massachusetts (top 3 to be precise).

You are right on the border of what they accept. They typically require 3.7 or higher. Suggest also applying to Holy Cross in Worcester as a safety. HC which is about 30 miles west of BC. It is also run by the Jesuits and it is 1/3 the size of BC at 2800 students. Its academics are as respected or possibly even higher than BC's but doesn't have the name recognition due to not having the big name football team and having Boston in its name. HC is the top rated Catholic liberals arts college in the country per US News and World Report.
2 :
The Jesuits like to see the community service so I think you stand a great chance. The advice to also apply to fellow nearby Jesuit school College of the Holy Cross is good advice as well. Both are very similar with Holy Cross being a much smaller coummunity and smaller class sizes.

Can Someone help me find a job teaching elementary school in Massachusetts? I'm certified! Thanks!?

You ought to be certified if you are after a teaching job!
2 :
Check this website to start. Also contact the state dept of education in Massachusetts.

One thing that might help you to know: a lot of the hiring is done during the summer, and especially at the end of the summer. Teachers who want to resign or go on leave have a deadline by which they must contact the school department, and they usually wait till the last minute to commit themselves. So don't panic that it's late August. It's a great time to apply. Send a resume with cover letter to the school department personnel office in every town you would be willing to work. Make sure your documents are perfectly proofread and well-written. (Get help if necessary.) Whoever is looking through the resumes will notice neatness, grammar/spelling, correct but simple form, your degree, your certification, and the job category. Forget about gimmicks like color of paper and ink. If you don't have time, this is optional: When I was applying, people seemed to notice when the inside address on the letter was individual to their system. E.g., Ms. Jane Johnson, Director of Personnel, _____ Public Schools," and so on. I was asked, "How did you happen to be applying to the Braintree Schools on x date?" as if it didn't occur to them that I was blanketing Southern Mass with my resume. But you might as well pick up the phone, call Braintree School Department, and ask, "May I have the name of the personnel director?" It only takes a minute. When you say Boston and surrounding areas: seriously think about how far you would drive. A hour might be too much, but 45-50 minutes is really not that bad. Just be ready in the interview when they ask you how you're going to deal with the "long commute" to Sharon or Norwood. Good luck!

I grew up in Boston and went to Boston College. During college, I lived in Brighton, which is right next to Allston. Allston/Brighton is not the nicest part of Boston, but a lot of students live in the area as it is less expensive and still has good access to the above ground rail (The "T"). I'm not sure where 2 of your schools are located (Parts of BU are walking distance to Allston), but I would make sure they are somewhat close to Allston. If they are in downtown Boston, you can expect an hour long ride on the T to get to school. Boston is a great college city- the large number of schools make it a fantastic place to meet other young students. There are plenty of clubs, bars, and restaurants that cater to this group. Transportation in Boston is pretty good as well and you can get through your school without a car if you desire. I am living in London now, but am trying to move back to Boston because I miss it. Good luck.

Boston is a great college town. THere are 10,000s of students there and lots of clubs and every kind of thing to do that college kids like. Boston University is a highly respected school - it is fairly large, though. Most of the schools around Boston are rather small. Speaking of which, I have been around Boston all my life and I never even heard of the the other schools you mentioned. Are these real schools or some kind of internet scam? Be sure you check them out carefully before you send in any money. Like, there is no school where you can become a psychiatrist without getting a medical degree first. ps If you are a serious Christian, especially Baptist, you should really be thinking about whether Boston is the right place for you. It is a very liberal community with a prominent Gay community and, I would say, a fairly weak and 'dissed' Christian community which in any case is mainly Roman Catholic. Do some serious homework before you travel across the country.

Are there any good acting schools in Massachusetts?

I really want to try and become an actress. I live in Massachusetts near Boston. Also, if I were to move...which is better New York or L.A to pursue an acting career?

I live in Boston too and I'm trying to find acting schools. ITS SO HARD, MAN! You would think acting classes would be everywhere here. Cpcasting.com has a class that I was going to take but there isn't enough kids signing up so they had to temporarily cancel it. You should sign up.
2 :
I'm going to answer your N.Y. or LA question first and then your Boston predicament. It depends on what kind of acting you'd like to do. LA will primarily book you film stuff (mostly commercials to be realistic) and NY will mostly book you stage roles (if you're lucky). But you can find either one in both cities and plenty of voice over work which pays ALOT and is totally underrated. Okay now on to Boston: If you want to be a professional actor in Boston I would suggest joining stagesource. Stagesource (google this) has annual auditions for pretty much every major theater company in the area and you don't need to have an equity card to participate (thought you do need to pay to be a stage source member). Stagesource makes it so you don't really need to get your equity card in Boston unless you get cast in a show that requires you get your card (and I believe those are pretty rare in Boston though pretty much every professional theater in NY will demand you be a AEmember). There are also plenty of community theaters/fringe theater companies/non-professional theaters around Boston that you can audition for to pad your resume with. They probably won't lead to a professional career but you'll gain experience and more importantly contacts with other cast members/behind the scenes theater people who can hook you up down the line (you never know where your fellow actors/crew members will end up and who will want to take you with them..) I check a few audition websites like NETheater411, or emact.org (google these) and have found a lot of great theater companies this way, most of which most their casting calls their websites. Now, if you're still young (if you look around eight to fifteen years old) and are pretty attractive you can get some work through BostonCasting which is a pretty good casting agency in the area that works really hard for their kids as long as their kids work really hard for them--but this place is primarily modeling so you need to be consistently cute. The plus side of Bostoncasting is that you'll sometimes book stuff outside of Boston and it is professional work so who knows where that'll lead you. I'll leave you with the most important pieces of advice: Go to college (you can major in theater), remember that any casting agency that asks you for money up front without booking you a job (John Robert Powers..) is a scam, and be persistent in what you want. Good luck!

Do nice people still exist? I live in Massachusetts about 1 hour from Boston? Where do the nice people live?

I would like to move my kids and I to a nice place. Where people are kind. My kids "friends" are horrible. One hit my daughter in the head - another kids Mom called all of their friends and trash talked my daughter because they had a minor disagreement - my daughter did nothing wrong. The kids are mean - the parents are hostile and nasty. Please help me school ends soon and I'd like to move over the summer. Any nice people in New Hampshire or Maine? or anywhere in the USA we need a fresh start.

Unforutnately i think you'll find this everywhere. If you are religious, i suggest a catholic or lutheran private school. My parents werent 100% religious, but they put me through 9 years of private school. The teachers are able to be more strict and have more say over the content that is teached than in public schools. And as such, i think you get a better mix of mature families. Of course this wont be 100% of the case and im sure there are pleasant public schools as well, but this is based on my experience as a child and the difference i saw going from 6th grade private to 7th grade public school.

Might I suggest, Bozeman, Montana? It is a wonderfully beautiful place, with the NICEST PEOPLE I have ever met. The air is clean, the cost of living is cheap, and there are 5 men for every 1 women! I used to live in California, but I never had friends who were girls, we just never got alone. Now I have so many friends that are girls, because the people out here are so nice. My friends are like family, you need help and they are there for you... plus they ask for nothing in return. Oh and the MEN, they are REAL men! They take care of business, they protect, AND they can bring home the beacon. My friend Kyle is from New Hampshire and he LOVES it here. Everyone I know who moves here, never leaves. I was going to leave, but decided that Bozeman, Montana has everything I'm looking for. I have a great job, we have three ski resorts with in an hour of us, and rent is cheap. I pay $650 for a HUGE two bedroom one bath apartment with a garage. Plus, the rents out here are coming down fast and you can get a 1 or 2 bedroom for between $450 and $550 NOW!
16 :
Move to the South Thats were you can find nice people. We have Mean people down here but thats because there Yankees.
17 :
Ya'll can move to Georgia.....we still have good values and respect for one another here. And no, we aren't just a bunch of uneducated hicks. If you want nice, it's the only place to be! And the weather is unbeatable. Move anywhere in the south really, we're all pretty nice down here! Good luck!
18 :
NH isn't bad, but there are alot of Masshole types moving there. I've lived in Maine too, but didn't like the people there at all. North Dakota probably has the nicest people I've met, but it's boring as hell there and wicked cold year round.
19 :
Yeah kids are mean. Dont go to Maine or NH thought because the people arent nicer just dumber and more risk of your children getting pregnant at a young age in those states. There are nice towns in Mass but you have to look. Travel more western mass, further from boston and the people get nicer.

Are there any full ride scholarships for the state of Massachusetts?

I'm currently living in Florida, but I'm considering going up to Boston for school. Here in Florida, we have what's called a Bright Futures Scholarship, which is a free-tuition scholarship that any student can get with a certain GPA and number of community service hours. I was just wondering if there was any kind of similar scholarships for the state of Massachusetts? I've tried researching them, but every scholarship has a different list. If anyone has any informative websites as well, that'd be great. Thanks!

All states have programs that are funded through state tax dollars, but unfortunately for YOU, you must be a state resident to qualify. Going to school in Boston is going to cost you a fortune, esp since you are a resident of FL. Go to school in florida, you won't regret it when it comes time to make student loan payments.

internships; ask your high school teachers if you can use them as a reference or preferrably have them write a letter on how good of a student you are
3 :
Volunteer at a Nursing Home. This would get you 'into' the health care field. Without some kind of 'degree' like LNA it is unlikely that you could get a paying job in the field.
4 :
Actually, the best thing would be to become a CNA or certified nursing assistant. Sometimes hospitals will take you and certify you there. You could also try being a PCA or personal care attendant. If you are interesting in going into nursing I would encourage you to get some hands on patient experience since it is usually a lot different than people expect. Stocking shelves is a lot different than draining urine from a catheter bag...you get what I mean? You might be better off getting a job at a Long Term Care facility or nursing home, they usually need more help than the hospitals. Go to your locate hospitals website and contact human resources.

Which is better? Oregon State University or University of Massachusetts in Boston?

I am an Asian high school graduate student and I got accepted from these two universities. I would like to get some information to compare these two schools, so that I can choose which school to go to. I applied Economics as my major... but I am thinking of changing to double majoring in Engineering and Education. Simply according to 1. UMB is more expensive than OSU and 2. Boston has more Japanese and Chinese speakers (since I know both) than OSU, I would choose to go to OSU. But I would like to know whether I made the right decision and to know more about both schools. Thank you very much!!! Dr. Evol ==> But I am already back in my home country, which means it is impossible for me to go to any campus visits... And thank you for all the other contributors!!! ^ v ^

suggest you find out [ask them for the list] which companies recruited graduates in Econ. and/or Engineering from each. Then go with the one whose list you like better. GL
3 :
UMass. Even though it is more expensive I think the education is better there and you would feel more comfortable knowing that people of your race of nationality are near you. You can socialize easily with your groups meanwhile if you do economics you have alot of places of internships nearby (boston, nyc).
4 :
I'm a fan of Yahoo!'s education website (URL below) for finding out basic stats about schools. So that's a good place to start. - Should I get paid when I plug a Yahoo! resource...? - That said, this doesn't tell you which is a better school for you, as this is really a highly personal decision. I always suggest to prospective students at my university that they *visit* the schools they're thinking about seriously. The truth is, there are a lot of intangibles that come into play when you're trying to figure out the "best" school for some one, and the only way to figure those out is to visit. So, call the Office of Admissions at each place, and they'll help you arrange a visit. Be sure to ask to have the chance to sit in on some classes, meet some students, and meet some professors from your future department. This will help tremendously! That said, this is *really* late in the game. You should get on this immediately if you want to get those visits in. At my institution, for example, we've just about settled out all of the first-year students' schedules! Good luck!
5 :
You are talking about two vastly different areas. Corvalis is in the middle of no where, the campus is the life. There is nothing around for quite a ways. UMASS Boston is in a big City, a lot of distractions but also a lot more to see. Both are great schools and if I were going for Engineering I would go to Oregon State. I work as an Civil Engineer now and have worked in the past with several graduates of both (I lived in Boston, Philly and CA) by far the graduates from OSU seemed better perpared for working inthe Engineering community...but Boston is great as well. UMB will also cost more for living expenses for your time there as well.
6 :
I think you made a great choice (i am a University of Oregon student) and although we have a big rivalry against OSU, it's a good school with great credentials. The atmosphere is fun and I think you'll appreciate the school. I am from Texas, moved to UofO 3 years ago and couldn't be happier with my choice. I really love the oregon university system. Good luck and I hope OSU works for you.
7 :
I live in Massachusetts. UMass-Boston does not have a good reputation around here. You would be better off at another campus or another school. There are plenty of colleges and universities in Massachusetts in Boston too. I cannot recommend UMass-Boston.

Is there such thing as "Traffic School" in Massachusetts or is this just a California thing?

Because if it is, it's unfair that my friend does not have to have a traffic violation if he attends traffic school and I do here in Boston.
Boston - 2 Answers

Massachusetts Traffic Schools You may be able to complete a traffic school course in order to lower fines, reduce points, and keep your insurance rates from going sky-high. See traffic schools approved by the Registry of Motor Vehicles here. Traffic School can also be taken on line. Although, prior to taking an Online traffic school course, you may need court approval, recommend Driving University as the best driving course to help make you a safer and more confident driver. Whether you decide to take an online course such as Driving University or a normal classroom traffic school, be sure to check with your court to make sure they'll accept it for point reduction or ticket dismissal.
2 :
every state is different. they all have seperate governments, so we have different laws from state to state, they dont make laws based on how "fair" it is for people from other states. we do have traffic school here but i'm sure its alot different from california. my friend had 6 tickets and she had to go to traffic school, or else lose her license. if she had got one more ticket within a year she would have lost it. you dont get to go to get out of 1 ticket, its for ppl who have mulitple tickets and fines, so basically its for the ppl who really need some reminding on how to drive lol. massachusetts is pretty strict when it comes to driving and insurance, they dont care if it is unfair. just be careful and follow the rules bc you never know where there is a cop hiding waiting to give you a ticket!
