College of William and Mary versus Boston College?

I recently received all of my college letters, and have narrowed down my choices down to College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia and Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. I live about 1/2 hour south of Boston in a suburb. I go to a moderate sized public school and am graduating 3rd in my class. I am interested in studying history (especially American) and political science. My top school was Georgetown, but I was waitlisted. I am remaining on the waitlist, and will probably attend if accepted. I want some opinions from people who have had experiences with either of the schools. I love them both and am visiting the accepted students days, so I am having a hard time deciding. Just as a side note, my best friend will definitely be attending BC. Any input would be appreciated. (And I know that the choice is mine, and I plan on making that choice, but I would just enjoy some advice.)

W&M. First, it's a fantastic school. Second, getting out of boston for a few years will be a good experience. If you're that interested in American history, chances are that you've exhausted the historical sites in Boston and what better place to experience the founding of the US than at the school where Washington and Jefferson both went? It's just over 2 hrs from DC so you can go there whenever you want

How to survive in the US as a student?

okay, this has to be my 3rd or 4th question about studying in the United States. To be precise, the only sure schools we can afford are 2-year community colleges. That leaves Universities out. Being an Alien student and having no relatives in a certain city or state, how do I survive? I mean, where will i get and how much should be my pocket money? That and many aspects in studying in US as an alien. I need info. Oh yeah... I want Boston, Massachusetts.

Get a job. Check any places that are hiring and ask your school if there are any positions available there.

Boston is very expensive, I'm afraid. You'll need $800-$1200 a month for rent/utilities ($650-$800 if you're really lucky and find a place to share with some people), $30-$60 a month for public transportation, $100-$200 a month for food, and then I'd recommend $100-$200 a month for incidentals (entertainment, etc.). It's the rent that's the worst -- if you're thrifty, you can save on the rest. To find a place, use Craigslist, but be careful. It's hard coming from another country, but don't let yourself be swindled. If your college has a program to match stu

ARE CERTAIN TYPES of body fat healthy for you? what would think of a research that says...?

...having a big.... derriere is healthy for you?... this is coming from a Reuters report from a clinical study performed by a Dr. Robert Khan... who says subcutaneous helps improve sensitivity to the hormone insulin...which regulates blood sugar... the Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts study shows that fat which collects around the hips... known as subcutaneous fat which collects under the skin appears to fight type 2 diabetes... what the researchers did was to inject subcutaneous fat into the bellies of mice ... they lost weight and their fat decreased in size and their blood sugar levels improved... the doctor also found that this had a beneficial effect when placed inside the abdomen... he performed the study because he wanted to know why certain types of fat located in different parts of the body caused different types of risks and diseases... hmmm.. interesting... do you wonder if people will be running out to the nearest doctor to have extra fat injected into their rears? WYT?

Fat consumption helps level out lipids. You just need to eat more fat. Eat high saturated fat, moderate protein. You see, saturated fat gets a bad rap because it is solid at room temperature. They say that it will clog your arteries. They don’t tell you that you need it for hormone regulation and to retain Vitamins A,D,E, and K. Also, they say that it will raise cholesterol. Your body makes cholesterol, about 1g a day. If you eat cholesterol your body doesn't manufacture as much. You cannot eat as much as your body makes per day. Now, when you live off of grains (like tofu, oatmeal, any soy, potatoes, corn, ect.) your body cannot produce the insulin to process it all, so your liver makes the excess into VLDL to protect your kidney's from the excess sugar spilling over into them. VLDL isn't bad, but as it is used it degrades and loses triglycerides become LDL (bad cholesterol). Consuming fat takes a load off of your body and can actually help lipid levels because if you are eating lots of fat you probably aren't eating lots of carbs. Eat natural things like butter, green vegetables, non starchy vegetables, starchy vegetables in small amounts, olive oil, nuts, beef, eggs, chicken, fish, whole diary cheese, whole diary milk, ect. Also, your high will grow faster and so will your nails.

Even if this research is accurate/true it still does not matter because the leading cause of death in the US is heart disease not cancer or diabetes. The magnitude of deaths resulting from heart disease is so great that it dwarfs all other diseases. Consider this, for more than 40 years, heart disease has been the leading cause of death for Americans AND the number has been increasing every year without a plateau in the statistics. This means more deaths from heart disease this year than last year, and more next year than this year. Just to give you a comparison. The US deaths from WWII was about 404,000 over 4 years which is about 101,000/year. US deaths from heart disease is over 250,000/year - more than double the rate of war casuality from WWII. Furthermore, we are seeing heart disease in younger people. It use to be that we see it in people in their late-60's or older. But we are beginning to see it in people as young as late-30's. Obesity is now pandemic in American society, so a shortage in body fat is not likely a concern. Next time you are out in public, just take a sampling of people you see out in the street and you will see that obese people are by far the majority.

OK, I guess this means that means I'm in trouble! You see, you just can't win in life sometimes, no matter what you do! I recently lost 40 pounds of weight I had been carrying around for 18 years. I am 53. I did it by eating properly and exercising over a period of less than five months. Now, no one told me during that time that it was good to have fat on me. In fact, from everything I had ever read, it was not a good thing that I had fat on me! So, now that I am at the weight I was at 20 and toned at the same time, you can imagine how thrilled I am by this achievement so late in life, yet another article sheds a new light! I had never had fat in the areas you're describing until I gained weight and even then there wasn't a large concentrated fat storage in any particular area, just an overall fat issue. I guess you could say, I carried my fat well, if there is such an achievement in life. I am always astounded when I read such articles and yes, I did hear what you are stating on the news last week. It just goes to show you, that you really can't win, no matter what you do. I think that we have so much information out there, everyday on a continuous basis, that we simply have to use our basic common sense so that we don't live in a state of confusion. I feel, and no, I'm no "expert" that the weight I was when I reached adulthood was the weight I was meant to be in life. That may sound strange to some people. I don't think so, but I sure feel better about myself now, then when I had those 40 pounds of extra weight on me! Best Wishes!

BTW his name is Ronald not Robert. (Made it a little more difficult to check out) Kahn noted that obesity in the abdominal or visceral area—the classic “beer belly” or “apple” shape—increases the risk of diabetes and mortality, and said it has been thought that obesity in subcutaneous areas—the “pear” shape—might decrease such risks. “We started out to answer the basic question of whether fat inside the belly is bad for you because of where it is located, or is abdominal fat itself different from fat in other places,” said Kahn, an internationally recognized researcher in diabetes and metabolism. To test if the differences were due to anatomic location or intrinsic properties of the fat deposits themselves, transplantations were performed in mice. The researchers found that when subcutaneous fat was transplanted into the abdominal area, there was a decrease in body weight, fat mass, glucose and insulin levels and an improvement in insulin sensitivity. By contrast, transplantation of abdominal fat into either the abdominal or subcutaneous area had no effect. The subcutaneous fat, which is more commonly found on women’s legs and buttocks than men’s, has also been shown to improve the production on the hormone insulin, which regulates blood sugar levels and adipokines which boost the metabolism. Professor Ronald Khan, who led the research, said: “The surprising thing was that it wasn’t where the fat was located, it was the kind of fat that was the most important. “Even more surprising, it wasn’t that abdominal fat was exerting negative effects, but that subcutaneous fat was producing a good effect

Does anyone have an estimate as to when "fisting" will become part of our nation's school's curriculums?

Fistgate III: Obama’s Safe Schools Czar’s ‘Black Book’ For Kids Included Tips on Fisting and Pi$$ing on Your Partnerby Jim Hoft In March 2000 the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) organization of Massachusetts held its 10 Year Anniversary GLSEN/Boston conference at Tufts University. This conference was fully supported by the Massachusetts Department of Education, the Safe Schools Program, the Governor’s Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth, and some of the presenters even received federal money. During the 2000 conference, workshop leaders led a “youth only, ages 14-21″ session that offered lessons in “fisting” a dangerous sexual practice. During the same workshop an activist asked 14 year-old students, “Spit or swallow?… Is it rude?” The unbelievable audio clip is posted here. Barack Obama’s “Safe Schools Czar” Kevin Jennings is the founder of GLSEN. He was paid $273,573.96 as its executive director in 2007. Jennings was the keynote speaker at the 2000 GLSEN conference. Barack Obama’s “Safe Schools Czar” was the keynote speaker at the GLSEN/Boston Conference at Tufts University in 2000. High school students at the conference learned about fisting and watersports from the GLSEN activists. Jennings is seen here holding the conference program. (Via Mass Resistance) Unfortunately for GLSEN, undercover journalists with Mass Resistance recorded these outrageous sessions at Tufts University. The audio was later leaked to a local radio station. This created such an uproar that GLSEN leaders were forced to apologize for their disgusting behavior. Despite the controversy, Barack Obama’s Safe Schools Czar Kevin Jennings and his GLSEN organization did nothing to clean up their act. In fact in 2001 activists handed out “fisting kits” to the children and teachers who attended the GLSEN conference. But that’s not all. The children who attended Kevin Jennnings’ 2005 GLSEN Conference also left with their own “Little Black Book – Queer in the 21st Century”. This book exposes the young teens to– Rimming – Fisting – Water Sports (Pi$$ Play) – Toys It’s what every teen needs to know… And in case any of the teens got bored, GLSEN was also kind enough to include a list of the local gay bars in the booklet distributed to high school students. Because of his excellent work with children Kevin Jennings was promoted by Barack Obama to be his Safe Schools Czar. Today he’s running the Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools in the US Department of Education. Do you feel safe now?

Nah you're wrong. You're spreading misinformation - probably not intentionally though. Here is a very thorough description of the sexual awareneness speech and activities hosted by the glsen at a high school: http://www.massnews.com/past_issues/2000/12_Dec/1200fist1.htm This is the account from a conservative teacher who was shocked that Jennings used a passage from the bible to encourage students to "do more" more Gay and Lesbian equality. Next she was disgusted by poem readings which contained in her mind sexually explicit sub-messages. Then she was later shocked by skits put on by the students which contained sexual innuendo. During either the poems or the skits somebody interpreted it as fisting apparently and is now shamelessly rewording the truth to terrorize gullible people like yourself

Should I apply to UMass Boston if I already got in at GSU?

I never wanted to live in Georgia...but my family is here, and I couldn't afford a place on my own right now anyway. I got into Georgia State, pending my grades stay the way they are at the end of 12th grade. Should I waste another $60 applying to the University of Massachusetts? Do I have a good chance of getting in there if I was already accepted at GSU? Apparently, GSU is a tier 2 school. Is UMass Boston higher than that? I just want to study Criminal justice and creative writing (maybe).

U Mass Boston is a commuter school and would not be a good place for an out of state student, especially on account of the tuition costs. U Mass Boston is not a great school. U Mass Amherst is the best U Mass campus. There is no need to leave the state to study criminal justice. Creative writing leads to virtually no career opportunities.

I want to be a psychiatrist so I do what in college?

so ive been looking at colleges in massachusetts, especially university of massachusetts at amherst, boston college, and boston university. ive been thinking about majoring in psychology or double majoring in psychology and sociology, then going to medical school to pursue my pre med degree. do i have this all planned out right? im only a junior in high school. im just curious as to what else i should be doing if at all. I know im supposed to be like all involved in the community so i volunteer at my church in the 4th and 5th grade department, was a volunteer at this hospital in my city, im in student council, spanish club, the alpha beta society...what else? i know i want to be a psychiatrist. ive just been told i need to major in something then go to medical school afterwards to get my med degree. is there a course i have to take in my first 4 year college in order to go to medical school? im not going to be a psychologist... psychologists cant diagnose and prescribe, psychiatrists do. im going to be a psychiatrist. what courses should i take besides psychology and mcat prep? thanks all you sexy bitches who helped me out!

you want to become a psychiatrist or a medical doctor? sounds like you're going to college for psych. then switching? i dont know...

add in taking a Mcat prep course. good luck!
5 :
since psychiatrists have to be MD's, i would think you need to be in a pre-med program in college before you go to medical school. maybe you should find out the requirements for med school &/or a psychiatric specialty. psychologists and psychiatrists are very different in their counseling approaches.
6 :
To be a psychiatrist you first must become an M.D. To be a psychologist, many colleges offer that specialty, at the Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. level. To practice clinically as a psychologist you had better get a Ph.D. degree which takes about 7 years after high school. For med school take any degree that is high in courses in biochemistry and psychology.

The only person who can give you the proper answer is a representative in the advisory office.
8 :
Actual classes depend on your undergrad program and chosen med school requirements. Generally you take: Biology or Zoology 1 year with lab Inorganic Chemistry 1 year with lab Organic Chemistry 1 year with lab Physics 1 year with lab English 1 year during your undergrad at a minimum to prepare for the MCATs

College of the Holy Cross has twice the national rate for acceptance to medical schools and is nearing completion of a 60 million dollar science complex extension. HC is exceptionally strong in Premed and the sciences in general. More than 10 percent of the 35,000 living alumni of Holy Cross are physicians. HC is located 40 minutes west of Boston in Worcester which is on the commuter rail to Boston, 12 trains per day. It is the oldest Catholic school in New England and is routinely ranked around 30 on the US News and World Report national rankings. The HC campus is in the top ten of most beautiful college campuses in the nation per the 2009 Princeton Review. Other great premed schools in the Boston area are Tufts, Boston College, Brandeis,

So I've been suspended from school...?

I wrote something on our school page on Wikipedia and I got suspended. I was supposed to get expelled but I got a suspension because I'm one of the "good kids" and I've been working my a** off this year to maintain my grades (As and Bs). Now, when time comes to apply for college, my principal said that she would personally talk to the colleges that I would apply for and explain my suspension. As in, when I get my application form I do not fill out the disciplinary action part but that my principal would call up the school to tell them personally that I'm not a bad kid and that this suspension was the one time I got in any major trouble. So I was wondering, how badly would this affect my future in college? As in, will I still be able to get in to such universities like Boston College or Boston University (I live in Massachusetts)?? I wrote on Wikipedia that a teacher (who I happen to hate very much) raped a student (who's one of my best friends). I was just joking around, when my friend found out that it was me and I got in trouble, he just laughed it off and we're cool. He knew I was just kidding around and he likes stupid sh*t, I mean who doesn't?? haha Oh, and it's a 5-day suspension out of school, if that gives any help for an answer.

I got suspended once in school, (for skipping), and I still got accepted to every school I applied to. I went to Michigan State University. never had anything as small as a simple suspension get in the way. As a teacher, i can assure you that a suspension is not that big of a deal.
2 :
If your principal takes the time to call the colleges and explain that you are a good kid it'll most likely show the colleges that you are worth admitting . it shows that the faculty believe it was a one time mistake and that it wont happen again. what did you write?

Its not a deal breaker. It will show a lot if the principal calls. I wouldnt imagine that principals call colleges to explain a students suspension. My guess is that the colleges will assume that you are in fact a good person. Learn from your actions though. What did you write that would get you in so much trouble? *rhetorical question
